There are normally 5 toes in the foot, found distal to the metatarsal bones. The toes are referred to, in medial to lateral order, as the great toe, 2nd toe, 3rd toe, 4th toe, and little toe. The toes are made up of individual bones called phalanges. A phalanx refers to one of the bones that make up the digits and is the singular form of phalanges.
The great toe contains a proximal and distal phalanx, while the other 4 toes contain a proximal, middle and distal phalanx. Tap the distal phalanx of the great toe and the following shadings will be toggled: proximal phalanges: green; middle phalanges: yellow; distal phalanges: red.
