The axis, the 2nd cervical vertebrae (C2) is the strongest vertebra and characterized by:
1. dens (odontoid process)- pivot for atlas
2. bifurcated spinous processes
The dens is a large superior projection from the body of the axis. Tap on the dens in the lateral image below and it will appear shaded in the lateral and superior images.
